Summer Solstice Rituals: Reclaiming Non-Digital Wellness This June

As we approach the Summer Solstice on the 21st of June, the UK is bathed in its longest days of daylight (and hopefully plenty of sun!). While this abundance of seasonal energy is beautiful, the extended sunlit hours can sometimes leave our senses feeling overstimulated, and light evenings may make sleep more challenging for us all.  This season, we invite you to explore the concept of ‘analogue wellness’—intentional moments spent entirely away from notifications, blue light, and digital noise. It is an opportunity to downregulate your nervous system and realign with the natural rhythms of nature.

At Absolute Aromas, we believe that the true healing properties of the plant can only be felt when nature is completely uncompromised. That is why every single batch of our oils undergoes rigorous GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) testing in our on-site laboratory here in the Hampshire countryside. This ensures our oils are 100% pure, unadulterated, and free from synthetic additives—delivering a truer aroma and the precise therapeutic benefits nature intended.

Protecting Your Summer Space: Natural Insect Repellent Oils

As the long solstice days invite us to open our windows or spend warm evenings out on the patio, the season also brings a higher presence of unwanted insects. At Absolute Aromas, our 30-year commitment to purity means we look to The Power of Nature rather than harsh synthetic chemicals to maintain an undisturbed, peaceful environment. Certain essential oils contain powerful, natural defence molecules that plants use to shield themselves in the wild. Citronella, with its bright, lemony aroma, is perhaps the most famous natural deterrent, while crisp Eucalyptus and woody Lemongrass offer excellent atmospheric protection. For a beautifully balanced, insect-repelling evening blend, try adding 3 drops of Citronella and 3 drops of our Cedarwood to your ultrasonic diffuser. It not only helps keep bugs at bay naturally but also enhances your space with fresh, natural scent.

Making your own citronella candles is a fantastic project, especially for outdoor use. To get a clean burn and a strong scent throw, we will use soy wax (which holds essential oils beautifully) and calculate the fragrance load precisely at 6%.

Here is a reliable recipe scaled for a single 250ml (approx. 8 oz) glass jar or metal tin.

Ingredients & Equipment Quantities

Item Exact Measurement
Soy Container Wax (e.g., Golden Wax 464)  180g
Citronella Pure Essential Oil (Cymbopogon winterianus) 11g (approx. 12.5ml)
Cotton Wick (e.g., ECO 4 or TCR 24/12)  1 piece
Heat-Resistant Container  250ml capacity
Wick Stickum / Glue Dot  1 piece

Essential Tools:

  • Double boiler or a heat-proof bowl over a pan of simmering water
  • Digital kitchen scale (accurate to 0.1g if possible)
  • Laboratory or digital thermometer
  • Wick centring tool (or a wooden peg/lollipop stick)

The Method

1.Melt the Wax:  Target: 80°C to 85°C.

Weigh out exactly 180g of soy wax. Place it into your double boiler. Heat slowly until the wax is completely liquid, checking the temperature regularly. Do not let it exceed 90°C.

2.Anchor the Wick:  While wax melts.

Secure the metal tab of your cotton wick to the exact centre of the bottom of your clean, dry container using a glue dot or a small dab of melted wax. Use a centring tool or peg across the top of the jar to keep the wick perfectly vertical and taut.

3.Add Citronella Oil:  Cool to 70°C.

Once the wax is fully melted, remove it from the heat source. Let it cool down to 70°C. Weigh and stir in 11g of pure citronella essential oil. Stir gently but thoroughly for a full 2 minutes to ensure the oil and wax fully bind together.

4.Pour the Candle:  Target: 55°C to 60°C.

Allow the scented wax to cool further until it reaches its ideal pouring temperature (around 55°C to 60°C; it will look slightly milky). Pour smoothly into your prepared container, leaving a 1.5cm gap at the top.

5.Cure and Trim:  Wait 48 hours minimum.

Let the candle sit undisturbed at room temperature for at least 24 to 48 hours to set completely. Once fully cured, trim the wick down to 5mm above the wax surface before lighting.

Safety Warnings

  • Never Leave Unattended: Never leave a burning candle within reach of children, pets, or near flammable materials.
  • Outdoor Ventilation: High concentrations of citronella essential oil can be overwhelming indoors. These candles are primarily intended for outdoor use or highly ventilated areas.
  • Burn Time Limits: Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time to prevent the container from overheating.
  • Skin Sensitization: Pure citronella essential oil is a concentrated botanical. Wash hands immediately if the raw oil comes into contact with your skin during preparation.
  • This recipe is provided for amateur, personal craft purposes. If you intend to retail or distribute candles commercially within the UK or EU, you must ensure compliance with all CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) regulations, obtain appropriate product liability insurance, and conduct comprehensive safety data sheet (SDS) validation for your specific fragrance percentages.

Your Step-by-Step Summer Solstice Evening Ritual

Turn this solstice into a functional boundary between a busy day and a restful night with this simple, screen-free evening sequence:

  1. Disconnect: Initiate your analogue hour by dimming overhead lights and turning off all phones, laptops, and digital screens to protect your eyes from blue light.
  1. Blend: Set up your Absolute Aromas Ultrasonic Diffuser and add 4 drops of Cedarwood and 3 drops of Pine Needle oil to the water reservoir.
  1. Breathe: Sit comfortably near the diffuser, close your eyes, and take five slow, deep breaths. Focus entirely on the sensory shift in the room as the crisp, pure forest aroma fills the air.
  1. Reflect: Spend 15 minutes reading a physical book, journaling, or simply enjoying the stillness of the high summer.

Step away from the screen, embrace the quiet luxury of the longest days, and let The Power of Nature support your peace.
